Its waters have a very high Ph, between 9 and 10.5, and can reach a temperature of even 60☌!
Located in northern Tanzania, in the african Rift Valley at about 600 m above sea level, the lake owes its name to a natural compound formed mainly by sodium bicarbonate. The lake, known as the cursed place which petrifies every living being, is one of the spookiest but most fascinating places on the planet. The flamingo paradise, from the end of May to September is home to nearly 3 million flamingoes that gather on the lake for the mating season, in one of the most amazing natural spectacle on earth. (1977).Lake Natron, a surprisingly remote 50-km long area whose waters are only half a metre deep, lies close to the border with Kenya, at the northeastern edge of Ngorongoro. The chemistry of the spring and lake waters was first investigated systematically by Stevens (1932) and later by Eugster (1970) and Jones et al. The first most extensive survey was carried out by Baker (1958, 1963) who mapped the Magadi area and provided detailed descriptions of its geology, mineralogy and geochemistry. The area was first examined by geologists in the early years of the twentieth century but no comprehensive mapping or geological examination was done (Smith, 1907 Gregory, 1921 Walther, 1922).
This is due to the fact that Lake Magadi is an active salt lake, containing a thick deposit of trona which has been exploited commercially since 1917. Lake Magadi area has been more investigated than Lake Natron. They are located south of the equator Lake Natron lies north of Tanzania (2☃0'S, 36☀0'E) and Lake Magadi SW of Kenya (1★0'S, 36☁8'E).
